CBF Virginia Oyster Restoration

Event Details

This event is for new Virginia Oyster Gardeners only and requires registration.
Registration closes June 16, 2022

Did you know a single adult oyster can filter up to 50 gallons of water in one day? Imagine how clear our waterways could be if we had more oysters! You can help us! By becoming an oyster gardener, you actually become a "foster parent" for a few hundred baby oysters. Oysters are the easiest pets you'll ever own because everything they need to survive is in the water. Attend a short presentation at one of our events to learn everything you need to know and more about becoming an oyster gardener.

Ready to become an Oyster Gardener? Please do the following:

  • Register as a New Gardener
    • Includes a New Gardener Kit containing spat-on-shell oysters, two cages, line, and resuable zipties; and one seat in the Seminar).
    • The fee is $25 to offset program costs.
  • If you are bringing anyone with you to the seminar, please register them under Guest
    • Our presentation spaces have a limited capacity, so we need to know how many people are attending.

During registration, you will be required to enter the latitude and longitude of your oyster gardening location. Follow these simple instructions to find that information on Google Maps.

  1. On your computer, open Google Maps (maps.google.com).
  2. Enter the address of your oyster gardening location in the search field.
  3. Right-click on the location. This will open a pop-up window. You will find your latitude and longitude in decimal format at the top. For example, 39.04660, -76.47935. The first number is your latitude. The second number is your longitude.
  4. During registration, there will be one field for latitude and one field for longitude.

On the Google Maps mobile app

  1. Enter the address of your oyster gardening location in the search field.
  2. When the location comes up, press your finger on the location. The latitude and longitude will come up in the search field, but abbreviated.
  3. Press your finger on the search field and it will show the complete data.
