Project Overview:
Join the Chesapeake Bay Foundation's Hampton Roads Urban Restoration Team as we install an urban buffer along the shoreline at Pine Cone Harbor condominiums in Hampton, VA.

Last summer, over 200 volunteers helped CBF staff create a 1,078-foot living shoreline alongside the existing marsh at the Pine Cone Harbor condominiums. This initiative aims to stabilize, protect, and enhance current habitats. However, we mustn't stop there. As sea levels continue to rise, we need to ensure that the wetlands can migrate naturally.

From April 7 to April 9 and from May 5 to May 7, volunteers will join CBF staff to convert 4,330 square feet of turfgrass into a native perennial buffer. This transformation will not only create space for the existing marsh to migrate but will also establish a beautiful, low-maintenance meadow for residents to enjoy. This initiative will help ensure the long-term stability of both the natural habitats and the land that the residents of Pine Cone Harbor call home. So, skip the gym for a day or two and help us prep and plant the urban buffer at Pine Cone Harbour!

Volunteer Work:

CBF staff will use a sod cutter to make a clean cut of the existing turfgrass. Once a row of sod is cut, volunteers will use shovels and wheelbarrows to load the sod into a 14-yard dumpster. After that, we will lay down black plastic over the freshly cut area and leave it in place for a few weeks to ensure that any weed seeds in the soil are killed.

  • Tuesday, April 7 (10 a.m. to 2 p.m.) - Remove turfgrass with sod cutter and place black fabric.
  • Wednesday, April 8 (10 a.m. to 2 p.m.) - Remove turfgrass with sod cutter and place black fabric.
  • Thursday, April 9 (10 a.m. to 2 p.m.) - RAIN DATE
