This project requires bending and lifting up to 30 lbs. continuously.

Join the Chesapeake Bay Foundation's Hampton Roads Urban Restoration Team for a unique opportunity to help test a new shoreline restoration technology at the Mallard Point Living Shoreline Project.

During this volunteer event, you'll help place and evaluate the Natrx Oyster Crown, a 30-pound interlocking concrete sphere designed specifically for volunteer-friendly installation. These structures work together to create a dynamic living shoreline, naturally shifting and settling to form contours and sheltered pockets that better support tidal wetland habitats.

Because the Oyster Crowns are a relatively new restoration tool, we're conducting a real-world trial before the full installation planned for spring 2027. On October 3, volunteers will help install several hundred Oyster Crowns along the shoreline and contribute to an exciting pilot project that could shape future living shoreline designs.Come get your hands dirty, learn about innovative coastal restoration techniques, and play a direct role in strengthening the Hampton Rivers' shoreline resilience. Your participation will help us test, refine, and improve this promising approach to habitat restoration and erosion control.

A special shoutout to the National Fish and Wildlife Foundation, Blocker Foundation, Immaculate Conception Catholic Church, Cox Communication, and other private donors for supporting this effort, as well as all of our wonderful partners from the Living Shoreline Collaborative.
