Current and prospective Captains: Join us for our annual Virginia Clean Water Captains Retreat at the Brock Environmental Center in Virginia Beach! Also see below for information on the Bounty of the Bay Dinner & Social Evening on October 11.

Registration deadline: October 9, 2024.

CBF's Clean Water Captains are local ambassadors for clean water across Virginia. This annual retreat provides Captains and prospective Captains with fun, timely, and interactive learning sessions to help them protect waterways. This year's workshop will include programming such as:
  • an overview of the issues CBF expects to tackle during the upcoming 2025 Virginia General Assembly session;
  • a moderated panel discussion with representatives from Virginia's General Assembly to hear their perspectives about the 2025 session and on how to effectively advocate;
  • interactive sessions to sharpen your communication skills so that you can share critical conservation information with confidence;
  • and networking with Captains from across the state as well as opportunities to collaborate with Captains from your region. 

Check-in will begin at 8:30 a.m. Programming will begin promptly at 9:00 a.m. and end by 5:00 p.m. Coffee, light breakfast fare, and lunch will be provided


TENTATIVE RETREAT AGENDA

8:30 a.m. - 9:00 a.m.: Check-in, registration packet pickup, coffee and light breakfast fare available

9:00 a.m. - 9:05 a.m.: Welcome

9:05 a.m. - 9:25 a.m.: Icebreaker activity

9:25 a.m. - 9:45 a.m.: Brainstorm session - generating topics for afternoon breakout groups

9:45 a.m. - 10:45 a.m.: A look Ahead at the 2025 General Assembly

11:00 a.m. - 12:30 p.m.: Legislator Panel: Effectively Advocating for Environmental Issues During the 2025 General Assembly

12:30 p.m. - 1:30 p.m.: Lunch

1:30 p.m. - 2:30 p.m.: Penning Power: The Secrets of Persuasive Writing

2:30 p.m. - 3:30 p.m.: Forging Alliances to Expand and Achieve Tree Canopy Goals

3:30 p.m. - 4:30 p.m.: Breakout groups for discussion and collaboration

4:30 p.m. - 5:00 p.m.: Closing Ceremony & Farewell

BOUNTY OF THE BAY DINNER & SOCIAL EVENING

Friday, October 11 at Brock Environmental Center | Tours of Brock Environmental Center available: 4:00-6:00 p.m. | Educational Boat Experience: 4:00-6:00 p.m. | Bounty of the Bay Dinner: 6:15-7:30 p.m.

Join us for an unforgettable evening of learning, comradery, and culinary delights! 

CBF's fantastic education team will kick the evening off by leading an educational trip on the Lynnhaven River aboard the Jenny S (please note space is limited) while volunteer tour guides provide a tour of the Brock Environmental Center and insight into the complexities of creating a living building. The Bounty of the Bay dinner will celebrate the richness of the Bay's offerings, with fresh fish taking center stage. We invite you to bring your favorite potluck dish showcasing the flavors of Virginia. Over dinner, you will build relationships with CBF staff and Clean Water Captains from across the state while enjoying the breathtaking views of sunset on Pleasure House Point.

You will receive a link to RSVP for the Bounty of the Bay Dinner once you complete your retreat registration. If your spouse/partner wishes to attend, they may join us for a fee of $25.
